November has been proclaimed National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Obama, who calls for a renewed commitment to research and treatment. Yesterday’s ALFA Update reported on the president’s official proclamation, which notes that research conducted and supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Health Administration has shed light on the early effects and identified risk factors for Alzheimer’s.

“We must continue the urgent work of giving substance to hope for all who dream of a day when words like ‘terminal’ and ‘incurable’ are finally retired from our vocabulary,” President Obama says in the proclamation.

ALFA’s Assisted Living Executive magazine features the latest strategies and forward-thinking solutions for providing quality care for residents with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments. Plus, the Alzheimer’s Association Web site features several resources for identifying the early signs of Alzheimer’s as well as how support research efforts and funding, including this list that identifies the 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s.

10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s:

Memory loss that disrupts daily life
One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own.

What’s typical? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.

This is good news. The president is raising awareness about the need for further research and treatment. One thing that LifeBio is doing to address this need is providing our certified communities with Memory Journals and MemoryBio (a version specifically designed for people with cognitive impairment or dementia). We have seen great results–the therapeutic aspects of reminiscence cannot be ignored. –Beth Sanders, CEO LifeBio.com
