In Search of Senior Employees

The latest issue of ALFA Update features a video report from The Wall Street Journal that looks at the success behind ReServe, a nonprofit group that pays seniors an hourly stipend to put their skills to work serving their communities.
ReServe is based in New York City and serves local communities by matching area seniors and baby boomers with programs that serve youth, seniors, and other members of the community who need help. (See the video link for an example.) The organization was founded in 2005 by Jack Rosenthal, president of the New York Times Company Foundation, and Herb Sturz, a senior advisor to the Open Society Institute and founder of the After-School Corporation. To date, ReServe has placed nearly 1,000 people in positions with 200 nonprofit organizations and public agencies in the New York City area.

Are any of your community’s residents involved in paid or volunteer work? How does that activity affect the resident’s well-being? Does your community help get seniors involved in paid or volunteer work?
